About me

Hello, I'm Ella, the maker behind Dalmeny Pottery.

I grew up just outside Edinburgh in a family where ceramics were part of everyday life. My mum is a potter, and from a young age, she trained me in the craft. After studying contemporary art practice, I was eager to dive deeper into pottery and learn hands-on. My mum kindly took me on as her apprentice, and together we worked for six years. As she begins to slow down and enjoy making at her own pace, I’ve taken the opportunity to create my own brand. Dalmeny Pottery allows me to push myself beyond my comfort zone and continue developing the skills she taught me.

My small-batch studio is based in the village of Dalmeny near South Queensferry. I make every piece by hand in the outhouse of my cottage, surrounded by nature and inspired by the beauty of Scotland.

Scotland’s landscapes have always been central to my work. I grew up visiting my family’s holiday home in the village of Lochgoilhead in Argyll, and my husband and I honeymooned on the West Coast of Ardnamurchan, a place we frequently return to unwind and be inspired by the beauty of the country we call home. These places continue to inspire me, from the colours I use to the textures I try to capture. Each piece is hand-brushed in glazes that echo the tones of the land and sea. Whether it’s a mug that reminds you of a quiet coastal walk or a dish that feels like a patch of heather on a hillside, my hope is that every item brings a little of Scotland’s natural beauty into your everyday life.

Thank you for supporting handmade and being part of this journey.
